English Language Arts Curriculum

English language arts curriculum encompasses the experience, study, and appreciation of language, literature, multimedia, and communication. It involves the language processes of speaking, listening, reading, viewing, writing, and other ways of representing. To articulate what students are expected to know and be able to do in these areas, 10 general curriculum outcomes (GCOs) act as beacons to guide instruction. These GCOs are consistent from grade primary to grade 12.

The English language arts curriculum engages students in a range of experiences and interactions with a variety of texts designed to help them

  • develop increasing control over the language processes

  • use and respond to language effectively and purposefully

  • understand why language and literacy are so central to their lives
  • Literacy Projects

The Nova Scotia Department of Education Literacy projects were established in the spring of 2000.

Beginning with a focus on grades Primary - 3 in its first year, followed by grades 4 - 6 in year two, the first stage of the project is known as Active Young Readers. In stage two, the project moved into the junior high school - middle level as Active Readers, grades 7 - 9. Literacy Success, is the final stage of the Primary - 12 project, specifically focused on high school, grades 10 - 12.

The key components of the project include time, student and teacher resources, professional learning and specific and explicit assistance to those students who require a higher level of support in becoming successful, fluent readers.
